On waiting for light
Most of the work happens before the shutter. A short essay on patience, weather and the twenty minutes that matter.
There is a version of this profession that is all movement — lenses swapped, poses called, a hundred frames a minute. I have never worked that way. The images I care about arrive quietly, and almost always after a long stretch of doing nothing at all.
Light is a slow collaborator. It arrives late, it changes its mind, and it rewards anyone willing to sit on a kerb for forty minutes without lifting the camera. I have learned to treat that waiting as part of the making rather than a delay before it.
When it finally comes — that low, honeyed band across a wall — you have perhaps twenty minutes. Everything before it was preparation. Everything after is editing.
